Eight students gathered in Room 3032 and began the first meeting of the RHHS Book Club on November 23; it was a cold afternoon. Among the students was Tyler Reid, a senior at Rocky Hill High School, and president of the new club.
“I started [the club] because I was interested in reading,” he says. “My vision is for the club to become a staple of RHHS and continue on for years after I graduate.”
“My favorite author is Kurt Vonnegut, and my favorite book by him is Slaughterhouse-Five.” Reid said. When asked what his favorite book of all time is, Reid gave the all-too-familiar, book-enthusiast shrug and shook his head, smiling.
“I wanted to find other people who were also interested in reading,” Reid said after the meeting. “I wanted to talk about it.”
The first meeting, filled with laughing, talking, and introductions, ended with a decision; after taking a vote, Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie was the book chosen to be read for the month of December.
All nine members at the meeting, including Jillian Barry, the club advisor, agreed to read the short murder mystery as Reid planned to secure copies for the members.
If you are an RHHS student who wants to join the club but couldn’t make it to the first meeting, you can read the novel online or pick up a copy at the library. Reid welcomes all; “Come to our meeting on December 21st or join the Google Classroom.”
