Last month’s Object of the Month had to do with time; this month’s Object of the Month has to do with saving it.

The multi-colored retractable pen has been around for many years. Recently, BIC has come out with a four-colored pen, but nothing beats the numerous colors available in the original.

A survey conducted in the lunchroom at 1:00 p.m on Feb. 17 revealed just how many pens students have been carrying. Abby Harding, a senior, carries 8 pens in her backpack every day. On the matter, she expressed, “It just takes up so much space that it adds to my personal crisis of having a freshman backpack which is greatly embarrassing at this age.”

Sitting next to her, Dorkasin Khamonezhad, a junior, who also only carried a few pens, stated she wished she could have more. “More blacks, reds, and blues. I wish I could have them without taking up so much space.”

Jillian Barry, an English teacher at Rocky Hill High School, said while she respected the pen, she would only use the one pen she had. Holding up her corporate-looking black pen, she said “I use one black pen, but it’s because I don’t like fun. I think it’s a little too much pizzaz,” she said.

Other responses shed a bright light.

Maria Corcoran, a senior, said, “It would be nice. I wish I was that rainbow pen girl.” The multi-colored retractable pen is a perfect solution to resolve longing and efficiency.

“I’d feel amazing if I had all the colors available to me at the same time,” said Grace DiMattio who was caught with 10 pens in her pencil case. Her friend, Abheri Basak, agreed with the sentiment. “I feel like I’d be able to take over the world, one ink at a time.” she said.

However, Ms. Urso, with 30 pens in her pencil case, said she could not possibly carry such a pen. “I would be distraught because when you think about holding a pen, like the ergonomics of holding a pen, you don’t want a pen that’s too heavy. You also have to consider what the outside of the pen is made of,” she claimed.

Looking for a professional opinion, Michael Fagan, Rocky Hill High School’s physics teacher, was asked how he felt about the multi-colored retractable pens saving both time and space. He was less on board with our proposal.

After deep thought, a familiar sight with Fagan, he answered, “You know, the faster you move through space, the slower time travels.” He added, “Now that’s not something that you would be aware of, it’s relative to something else.”

More practically, he said “You could lose time. If that’s your only pen and you lose it, then you’re in trouble. I like to have a lot of pens around in case I lose them all.” Perhaps the multi-colored retractable pen is not for everyone.
