The Law of Attraction, also known as manifestation, has gained popularity over the past few years. This law states that one will attract whatever they focus on and put their energy towards. Students and staff at Rocky Hill High School were asked about their views regarding manifestation.
“I believe that whatever you put out into the universe comes right back to you. So if a person does good deeds then that goodness comes right back,” said Ms. Urso, who first started learning about the Law of Attraction in 2007.
“That said, there are still bad things that happen to people which cannot be wished away through thinking good thoughts or being like Tinker Bell or Peter,” she added.
Mr. DeBacco does not believe in the Law of Attraction due to the lack of data to support it. “It’s not backed by science.” Senior Disha Parikh expressed similar opinions. “I try to manifest my physics grade and get higher grades on my tests and then it doesn’t really happen.”
Sophomore Alyssa Longo, who believes in manifestation, disagreed. “It’s basically just about energy and energy is a part of science. Everything vibrates at a certain level and that shows the Law of Attraction can work, even though it is just a theory.”
“Well, show me some proof. What type of energy? What type of form of energy? What strength of energy?,” said Mr. Debacco.
Longo revealed the areas of life in which the Law of Attraction has proved to be successful for her. “I manifested a better work ethic in school and also manifested love in my life and just more focus on self care.”
Urso also shared that she manifested her job at RHHS when she found herself driving through Rocky Hill and had been looking to leave her position at her old school.
“I drove by GMS and I’m like I’m gonna work there next year. I didn’t manifest that 100 percent obviously because I’m at the high school. But I was just like you know I’m gonna get a new job and I have a feeling it’s gonna be somewhere in Rocky Hill.”
Urso learned about the Law of Attraction by reading a book about it called The Secret. Similarly, Longo learned about this particular law through the documentary version of The Secret.
Urso added that one cannot rely solely on thoughts to manifest. “You set your intentions and then if you wait around for them, nothing is gonna happen. It’s really crucial that people take action steps towards their desires.”
While Ms. Urso doesn’t actively practice the Law of Attraction, Longo uses various methods to manifest. “For me, it’s kind of just like changing your mindset to a more positive mindset. I also do journaling and affirmations and that helps with self-confidence and more positive thinking,” said Longo. “I do more meditation now and that sometimes helps with visualizing what you want.”
Some students use objects to help them manifest. “I manifested with my crystals. I have a collection of them and I use them to manifest something,” said Sophomore Madison Bergenholtz. “I definitely have manifested some better grades before.”
While some may try to manifest lifelong dreams on their first attempt to practice the Law of Attraction, Urso thinks otherwise. “Start really small. Start trying with something very small.”
