After 35 years of dedicated service to the Rocky Hill music community, Kimberly Quinn, choir teacher of Rocky Hill High School, is retiring.
“COVID was probably the biggest challenge simply because literally we weren’t able to sing in person,” said Quinn.
Still, Quinn ensured that students would maintain their appreciation for music through activities such as exploration of music history and theory.
“For a class that’s built on singing, to not be able to sing in the classroom was difficult. I give credit to my students because they came through,” said Quinn. “They sent in recordings, I tried to give them feedback and they hung in there, and now we’re having a great year.”
Quinn began her teaching career in Ohio, where she taught for one year before teaching in Pennsylvania for two years. Her journey brought her to Rocky Hill, where she has been teaching for 35 years.
“There is such a sense of community here… I feel a part of the Rocky Hill community,” said Quinn when identifying what separates Rocky Hill from any other place.
Even though Quinn is ready to enjoy more time with her family, she remains hopeful that the next choir teacher can continue to inspire students to pursue music. In handing down the torch to the next choir teacher, whoever it may be, she passes one piece of advice: “Encourage as many students as possible to be a part of the program as they can.”
After the spring concert of the Rocky Hill High School choir, Quinn’s students held a special ceremony for her retirement. Quinn was presented with a video that included many of her current and former students who extended their gratitude for her constant love and encouragement.
Quinn’s effect on the Rocky Hill community is evident in the successful concerts, festivals, and other performances that Rocky Hill choir students have performed in throughout their years.
Working between the Moser School, Griswold Middle School, and Rocky Hill High School, Quinn has inspired countless students to pursue their passion for singing and music in general. Her retirement marks the end of an era in the Rocky Hill choir community that will continue to be remembered for years to come.
