During English teacher Ms. Morgan’s April break, she and her family spent the night in a parking lot waiting for flood waters to recede in Fort Lauderdale, where they were on vacation.

The family arrived on Saturday, April 8, the following day it began to pour; Morgan said it was a “complete washout.”

They decided to watch “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at a movie theater about 11 miles from their hotel. After the movie, their GPS notified them that it would take over an hour to get back, which she said was peculiar.

As they began moving, they noticed the water rising along the sides of the road. The traffic began piling up.

“All of a sudden, an entire wave came across the front of the car,” said Morgan.

They drove up the street and parked in a grocery store parking lot, where they went inside to buy necessities. They ended up staying in the car until 5:30 in the morning, when it was safe to drive back.
